Watching Polls, Then Endorsing

When Representative Danny K. Davis dropped out of the race for Cook County Board president in November, he said his internal campaign polls showed that he had the best chance of winning the Democratic Party primary in February.

But the polls apparently did not put him far enough ahead to risk losing his Congressional seat, and on Thursday Mr. Davis endorsed one of his former opponents in the race, Dorothy Brown, clerk of the Cook County Circuit Court.

Mr. Davis said his two polls showed Ms. Brown running in front of the remaining candidates.

Mr. Davis admitted, however, that had any of Ms. Brown’s opponents been leading in the polls, he would have endorsed them instead.
