Former police officer Jon Burge was sentenced to 54 months in prison today for obstruction of justice and perjury, in what his critics and supporters all describe as the closure of a saga that has come to symbolize police-community relations and race relations on Chicago’s South Side. (...)

Cleared Death Row Inmate Files Suit Against Burge

Attorneys for a former death row inmate filed a federal civil rights lawsuit against Jon Burge Wednesday night, just days after the former Chicago Police commander was convicted of lying about the torture of suspects.

The lawsuit also accuses Mayor Richard M. Daley of covering up torture while he was Cook County state’s attorney in the 1980′s.(...)

Reaction to the conviction of former Chicago Police Commander Jon Burge on federal perjury and obstruction of justice charges Monday was intense and immediate, especially around the Dirksen Federal Building.
